Speed calculator

How much speed do you actually need?

Don’t overpay for speed you’ll never use — and don’t buffer through a line that’s too slow. Tell us how your household uses the internet and we’ll recommend a size that fits.

How the recommendation works

A speed plan is shared across everything happening at once, so we add up the demand of each activity — an HD stream needs roughly 6 Mbps, a 4K stream around 25, a video call about 4 — then add a bit of headroom so your line never runs flat-out. Gaming barely uses bandwidth, but it wants low, stable ping more than big numbers.

The honest truth: most homes are comfortable on 50–100 Mbps, and paying for 500 Mbps you never use is the most common way people overspend on fibre. If you already have a line, run a speed test to see what you’re actually getting, and use our cheapest fibre guide to pay less for the same speed.
