Cape Town has more than one fibre network under its streets, and if you’re in the city or the peninsula there’s a strong chance one of your options is Octotel. It doesn’t market itself loudly, but it has a habit of topping the independent network-quality rankings — which, for the thing that carries your connection, matters more than the branding.
What Octotel actually is
Octotel is an open-access fibre network (an FNO) focused on greater Cape Town and the Western Cape. Like the other big networks, it builds and runs the line and wholesales it to ISPs — so you don’t buy "Octotel" directly; you pick an ISP (Afrihost, Webafrica, Cool Ideas, MWEB, RSAWEB, Vox) that sells over the Octotel line. It has been building since around 2015 and passes somewhere in the region of 360,000 homes and businesses.
Where Octotel reaches
This is a regional network, not a national one — and that focus is its strength. Its footprint spans the Cape Town metro and out into the Western Cape: Somerset West, Gordon’s Bay, Melkbosstrand, Kraaifontein, Wellington and more. Within its patch it’s dense and well-established. Outside the Western Cape, you won’t find it — that’s where Vumatel, Openserve or Frogfoot come in.

The multi-gig party trick
One thing that sets Octotel apart from most networks: it doesn’t stop at gigabit. On supported ISPs you can get 2.5 Gbps and even 5 Gbps lines — genuinely future-proof speeds that most South African networks don’t offer at all. Realistically most homes never need more than 100–200 Mbps, but if you’re a heavy household or run a home business, it’s nice to know the ceiling is that high.

The verdict
Octotel is a quietly excellent pick if you’re in its Cape footprint — top marks for reliability, symmetrical speeds, and a multi-gig ceiling almost no one else matches.
